Batch review 1: Graphic Novels

Graphic Novels
Graphic Novels

Hi everyone! Today I am going to review the graphic novels that I read during Bout of Books 14; Thor: Goddess of Thunder, Ms. Marvel: Generation Why and The Wicked and The Divine: Fandemonium. So, Let’s get started!

Thor
Thor: Goddess of Thunder

Thor: Goddess of Thunder

Firstly I want to say that I haven’t read any Thor related comics before. I have actually read very little superhero-comics so this is definitely a new territory to me. That said, I loved this story of the new Thor. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone anymore that the new Thor is a woman. We don’t know who and not having a lot info I’m not even trying to guess. The art in this volume was really beautiful, I just wanted to stare on the pictures and at the same time I wanted to really know what was going to happen next. The plot was really good too, it felt easy to start to read this even without reading any of the previous volumes. The thing that really made me fell in love with this volume was the characters and their development. We see the new Thor throughout it, coming to terms with her new powers and in the end she is this really bad-ass woman who doesn’t stop even if it’s hard. The old Thor’s transfer though is more impressive in my opinion. Throughout the volume he grows and comes to terms with that that he isn’t the Thor anymore and tries to find his place in the universe. There’s so many characters that I really want to talk about because this seemed to be really character driven story. If you have read this and want to talk about it, comment down below!

Ms. Marvel: Generation Why

This is the second volume in this new arc of Ms. Marvel. I love how it portrays black, Muslim teenage girl as the main character and it seems that I am not alone in this because the volume 1 won a Hugo-award! I really loved the 1st volume’s art and so I was little bit surprised when I saw that it was so different on this volume. It wasn’t bad in any means, I just needed little bit time to get used to it. Otherwise it was as good as the 1st one. I loved Kamala (did you know that Kamala means terrible in Finnish :D) and I’m really intrigued to see what happens on the 3rd volume.

The Wicked + The Divine: Fandemonium

The Wicked + The Divine: Fandemonium

The art on this one is so colorful. That was my first impression on the 1st one as well as this one. I think with this one I got more in to the plot and what’s happening. There was just too many characters in too small place introduced in a small 1st volume and in this they had more time and space to properly concentrate on the characters. And you can see it definitely on the size of this volume too: in the 1st volume there’s 144 pages and on the 2nd has 168 pages. It actually feels much thicker than that. The one thing that I want really say about this is that THE CLIFFHANGER. Like how, what, how? I am not buying single issues so I wont see how this can continue after this before the 3rd volume comes out. AND I CAN’T WAIT.

Have you read any of these graphic novels? Tell me your thoughts on them, or if there’s some other graphic novels that I should be reading, down on the comments!
